Medical Health Insurance Plans
In 2013 I began offering Health Insurance plans through a private exchange for small businesses in California. Small business was defined as having 1-100 employees as of 2016. Cal Choice, the private exchange company that I represent has been in business since 1996 and provides an employer the ability to offer employees two of four metal tiers to choose from versus one of four metal tiers through the State Exchange.
Cal Choice offers eight major medical carriers in the greater Los Angeles area, and these multiple plan choices are available to the business owner and employees simultaneously under one consolidated billing format. This allows the Employer to give employee’s a wide range of choices for carrier preference and satisfy all employee preferences.
Providing health insurance for the business owner and his family beyond the Federal Exchange options.

As well as optional health coverage, i.e., vision, dental, chiropractic, and acupuncture, along with simple administration and great customer service.
My focus has been to offer group health insurance plans to small business owners with employees from 1-50 in the greater Los Angeles area through Cal Choice, the private exchange which provides benefits beyond what the state and federal exchanges can provide. The option creates valuable benefits for business owners, such as:
-
Providing health insurance for the business owner and his family beyond the Federal Exchange options.
-
Creating the culture of the valued employee’s through health plan benefit offerings
-
Increasing employee retention and satisfaction
-
Increasing productivity by offering health benefits resulting in a happier, healthier workforce
-
Reducing turnover and, in turn, increase profits by reducing costs associated with an unstable workforce.
Supplemental/Voluntary Plans
Voluntary and supplemental coverage are plans purchased in addition to major medical insurance voluntarily and intended to fill the financial gaps when a person is sick or injured. Voluntary supplemental plans are defined in several categories to cover a variety of illness and injury situations that pay cash benefits for situations such as:
-
Accidental injuries, i.e., broken bones, burns, or concussions.
-
Catastrophic plans cover illnesses such as heart attack, stroke, and cancer.
-
Short-term disability plans help supplement state disability benefits that will typically only pay 50-55% of gross income.
-
Life insurance is also available in the event of death to cover final expenses and replace the loss of income.
Medical insurance is intended to pay the doctor, hospital, and related medical services. Medical insurance does not cover the costs of daily living expenses.
Voluntary and supplemental plans help protect Consumers financially in three areas:
1. Medical copays and deductibles that are an additional financial burden for the household.
2. Daily living expenses, i.e., mortgage, rent, food, and utilities.
3. Loss of income. If a consumer is unable to work due to illness or injury, the voluntary/supplemental plans help fill the financial gaps that occur when their income stream is stopped or disturbed and provide peace of mind that they have plans in place for the unpredictable situations of life
Medicare Insurance Services
Medicare is health insurance provided by the federal government when an individual turns 65; certain disabling conditions may qualify individuals for Medicare before the age of 65. Individuals are eligible to receive these health benefits if they worked in the United States for a minimum of 40 quarters. Medicare health benefits will cover up to 80% of expenses incurred for hospitalization, doctor bills, and outpatient services. Therefore, understanding what other plans are available to offset the 20% out of pocket expenses is vital to managing their expenses, especially for those on a fixed income. There various plans that are available and should be considered:

• Medicare Advantage
• Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans
• Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan
• Part D Prescription Drug Plans
